The Boston Celtics have the best record in the Eastern Conference, so it only fits Boston’s City Edition jerseys are among the cleverest of any team. The Evolution of the New York Knicks Jersey

Knickerbockers Origins

The New York Knicks got their start in 1946 as one of the initial members of the NBA. Ned Irish – the founding father of the Knicks – led the club to victory against the Toronto Huskies (68-66) during their first showdown in this newfound league.

The Knickerbockers moniker goes back to the Dutch settlers who first settled in New York. The name comes from the first settlers rolling their pants just below the knees. This style of pants was eventually called knickerbockers, or knickers for short. Fred Podesta, a Madison Square Garden executive, claims that the name for the new NBA club was picked out of a hat. As the story goes, Ned Irish – a Knicks legend – was sitting around with a few business partners and chose a name out of a pool of submissions. “Knickerbockers” was featured on most entries, which solidified the name for New York’s first NBA team.

Father Knickerbocker was used as the team’s first primary logo. The iconic symbol featured an older man with a cotton wig, tricorn, and – most importantly – knickers. However, 1964 marked the end of Father Knickerbocker’s reign when the team redesigned their logo to promote the “Knicks” wordmark with a simple basketball clipart. This pattern would go on to serve as the primary logo until modern day – with several variations implemented, of course.

The Knicks have incorporated different designs – alternative and primary – of their logo on the shorts of their jerseys for much of their existence in the NBA.

The Knicks Greats

As currently part of the Atlantic Division, the New York Knicks have had their ups and downs over the course of their storied history. The Knickerbockers have made appearances in the playoffs 42 times throughout their 70 seasons played. The New York–based squad brought the Larry O’Brien Trophy back home to the Garden twice – first in 1970 and again in 1973 after defeating the reigning Western Conference champs: the Los Angeles Lakers.

Over the course of the team’s history, the Knicks have had several NBA greats fill their superstar roster. This includes Hall of Famers Patrick Ewing and Walt Frazier as well as exceptional ballers such as John Starks.

Notable New York Jersey Changes

1946: The Knicks inaugural jerseys feature the official colors of New York City: blue, white, and orange. White is utilized as the primary color with blue and orange accents. The jersey features the city name across the torso with numbers underneath.

1961: The Knicks wear white jerseys at home with blue letters outlined orange trim. Orange stripes, outlined in blue, run down both sides of the shorts.

1968: The jersey undergoes minor changes during this time. The lettering becomes an orange shade outlined by blue trim. The club ditches the belted shorts and opts for a simple drawstring design instead.

1979: For the first time in team history, the club implements drastic changes to the jerseys. In unforeseen turn, the team swaps the city’s official colors for a maroon and dark blue color palette. This year also marks the only time the team’s nickname – Knicks – will appear on the jersey.

1983: The team reverts to blue jerseys with orange numbers outlined in white trim, ditching the maroon colorway. The “New York” wordmark finds its way back to the front of the jersey, and the numbers are found right below. The Knicks decorate their shorts with jersey numbers on the right side and a team logo on the left.

1995: The Knicks remove the jersey numbers from the shorts, but a new alternative logo appears. The club rocks white jerseys with orange numbers outlined in blue for their home court fit. The official NBA logo is placed underneath the left edge of the collar.

2002: Reverting to blue as the primary jersey color, the Knicks stick with orange lettering and white trim. Black panels trail down both sides of the jersey and are outlined by thick orange stripes.

2016:The trim along the sleeve openings is shortened but maintains the traditional color scheme. The primary logo is featured on the bottom of the shorts, and the “New York” script across the chest is slightly modified.

NBA fans, players, and their coaches definitely prefer to win. Scoring more points than the other team has a positive result, of course, while the opposite is, well, the opposite. But that doesn’t mean that all fans take to Twitter to vent their disappointment. In fact, we’ve found that fans of a few teams are actually positive and optimistic – even after a loss.

Positive Tweets After a Loss

The Phoenix Suns sit atop the heap of most positive tweets after a loss, which may come as a surprise. Their 2015-2016 season didn’t end on a high note as they wound up 14th in the Western Conference. But their fans haven’t let that dampen their enthusiasm, even after yet another loss was recorded this NBA season. The future for the team could be bright still; a recent draft pick Tyler Ulis may lead to an improved overall team – maybe not right away, but he has a ton of potential.

The Orlando Magic didn’t put up amazing numbers during their most recent NBA season, either (they logged 35 wins and 47 losses to secure the No. 11 spot in the Eastern Conference). This didn’t stop their fans from checking in at No. 2 in the positive-tweet department. The team is in the midst of big changes, starting with new head coach Frank Vogel. While the coach situation hasn’t been ideal in the last few years (Vogel is the third in as many seasons), the poor performance of the prior head coach may have instilled some hope with the fan base for a new, fresh start.

The Miami Heat had a pretty good season overall, as they finished third in the East and clinched the Southeast Division title. Although they didn’t advance past the conference semifinals, losses during the season were likely met with less ranting and raving on Twitter since the team had a good thing going all season long (despite being neck-and-neck with the Hawks and Hornets in the division standings until the very end).

The Knicks, who finished third in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference despite a .390 record, appears fourth on our positive tweets list. And the Mavs clock in at No. 5 after finishing second in their division and sixth overall in the West. It definitely helps when a team is heading to the playoffs after a season ends, and the Mavericks ended the regular season on a strong note. The team only lost twice during the last nine games, which definitely boosts fan and player morale.

Charging Ahead

To go along with tweets that tend to stay on the positive side even in the face of a disappointing loss, each one of these teams has advantages that may make future seasons a little more cheerful.

Despite being predicted to miss the playoffs next season by ESPN, the Knicks still have plenty of upsides. These upsides include team president, Phil Jackson, recruiting valuable free agents such as Derrick Rose.

The Mavericks stay very involved in their community even during the off season, which is another way to keep fans happy and engaged. They also feel their recent signees have a lot of potential on the team.

The Orlando Magic also help fans keep the faith during the summer by keeping their Twitter account active. Recent tweets highlight tryouts for their dance squad, but they are also throwing it back with a ton of old school tweets.

The Suns are tweeting lots about the recent news that the team would be playing two regular-season games in Mexico City – news that is super exciting for fans south of the border. And the Miami Heat, despite the recent departure of long-time fan favorite Dwyane Wade, are working hard to complete their roster with some fresh moves designed to keep the team going forward.

Since the 1800s, Madison Square Garden has hosted circuses, political conventions, dog shows, professional sports drafts, boxing matches, concerts, and a ton of basketball and hockey games. Its impressive list of tenants and visitors has made the arena a beloved fixture in New York City. And as with many sports venues, it boasts an amazing home-court advantage for local teams.

Quantifying Home Advantage

Home advantage (whether you’re talking about home court or home ice) is an easy thing to sum up and quantify. In the case of Madison Square Garden and two of its well-known tenants, the New York Knicks and the New York Rangers, the advantage is worth noting. The Knicks show a 60.31 win percent playing at home in the Garden, which is 10.76 percentage points better than their career winning percentage. In fact, if they played every game at home during the course of a season, they’d notch 50 wins (or an equivalent, if the season happens to be shorter than 82 games) every year – something they’ve only accomplished 13 times over the course of their 70-season history.

Likewise, the Rangers also have an at-home win percentage greater than their overall win value – 49.30 percent. It’s a rate that’s 11.60 percentage points greater than their career winning percent. This translates to a 40-win season if all games are played at home during the course of a full season, which is a feat they’ve managed to achieve 15 times since 1968.

The Difference Is in the Differential

Home advantage often works in the team’s favor no matter if they win or lose, which can show in the point differential when comparing losing efforts with winning outings. During home games of the New York Knicks, for example, their point differential average is around 1.75 points greater in winning decisions when compared with their average differential in losing games.

The Rangers also notably have a higher point average overall than their opponents do during games at the Garden, no matter if they win or lose. In winning efforts, they enjoy a greater point differential than during losing efforts, which also reflects a home-ice advantage – 2.56 average point differential in winning contests, compared to -2.21 in losing matches.

All About the Garden

Madison Square Garden, also affectionately known as “The Mecca of Basketball,” “MSG,” “The Garden,” and “The World’s Most Famous Arena” is located in the Manhattan borough of New York City at 4 Pennsylvania Plaza. With a capacity of 19,830 for basketball, and 18,024 for hockey (the discrepancy due to court and rink sizes), it’s a premiere destination for sports fans, and an obvious haunt for fans of the home teams.  If you’re going, forget driving – Madison Square Garden does not provide parking, although area parking garages do participate in prepaid parking voucher programs.

The arena is conveniently located directly above Penn Station, making it easy to access via public transit – Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road, and PATH provide access to the venue by train. The subway lines 1, 2, 3, A, C, and E run to 34th Street-Penn Station. The B, N, F, V, N, R, Q, and W lines to 34th Street-Herald Square station (and a walk one block west) provide access as well.

MSG was originally built as the New York and Harlem Railroad depot before being converted into P.T. Barnum’s Hippodrome. This first incarnation hosted the first Westminster Kennel Club dog show in 1877. The property was then purchased by William Vanderbilt in 1879 and renamed Madison Square Garden.

New Yorkers enjoyed checking out presidential rallies, elephant shows, boxing exhibitions, and cycling competitions in this space before Andrew Carnegie and J.P. Morgan bought the building, demolished it, and rebuilt it on the same site in 1890.

In 1925, the Garden was again demolished and replaced by the New York Life building, and a new Garden was opened at 8th Avenue and West 50th Street. Eventually, this location fell out of favor and was closed (and once again, torn down) in 1967. A new structure, the current Garden, was then built above Penn Station.

Today, the world-renowned arena not only hosts the Knicks and the Rangers, but the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, the Big East tournament, and the NIT finals. MSG has also played host to major presidential speeches and political conventions. It has hosted both NFL and NBA drafts as well.

Looking Forward

The long, colorful history of Madison Square Garden has a treasured place in the hearts of New Yorkers as well as people everywhere. The unquestionable home-court advantage also makes this a favorite of the local sports teams. But if you want to see if for yourself, you’ll need to check it out within the next seven years – its status is currently threatened by Penn Station renovations, and will be rebuilt in a new location for a fifth time by 2023.
